I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth

 Hello, Friends and Family,

I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, but it sure looks like I have.  I haven't posted on here for quite some time.  I finished my one MBA course and I'm taking a break till the next semester.  DH had a schedule change, so I find myself being busy in the evenings with zoo duty loving every minute.  This includes walking Boomer.  I've learned to expect the unexpected and that I'll say very interested things to my dog.  The other day I told him not he's not allowed eating semi trucks.  Then on the same walk I told him frogs were off limits too.  Gee, I wonder what I'll say next.

DH and I celebrated Boomer's adoption anniversary party in June.  Here's some fun photos from the happy event.  He loved the birthday cake!

Life is well for us in SE Minnesota otherwise.  I'm done free motion quilting my very colorful quilt pictured so long ago.  I just attached the binding this week.  THis week I'll finish sewing on the binding and wash the quilt.  Then the quilt is ready for family use.  It's been loving used by the cats, now it's time for family usage.

DH and I saw "The Dark Knight" Friday morning.  Awesome Movie!!!  It is worth all the hype and so much more.  We plan to see it on an IMAX screen to enjoy the scenes shot on IMAX films.

Life is busy, but so much fun!

No time for Quilting

I started classes this semester for my MBA program, and now I find myself with no time to do what I desire: spend time with family, pets and hobbies.  The class this half of the semester is about leadership.  Leadership is definitely an interesting area of study.  Though right now the focus is leadership in the business world, but I wonder about leadership in other areas of life because business is only one portion of the world (contrary to what some people may think), but leadership is found everywhere.  I wonder what areas in my life where I may develop leadership qualities and use them to further my goals/ambitions or further the goals/ambitions of someone else.

The animals are doing great.  New Boomer story and how he tells us he's hungry.  No, he did not take his food dish and strike DH or I on the head.  I was marking my quilt and preparing the next section for quilting and munching on some pretzels.  I should amend my statement and say I was trying to mark my quilt.  Boomer had placed himself on the quilt sandwich and had his head in my lap.  I couldn't resist his brown eyes and gave him all the attention he desired.  This didn't stop me though from munching on the pretzels.  I dropped a pretzel and he moved quickly and snarfed it up.  I looked at DH and asked if we had fed him dinner yet.  "Nope," was his repy.  We fed him, and Boomer was happy.  He got off the quilt and I was able to get back to marking the quilt.

I did my second attempt at landscaping this weekend.  Last year I planted Asian Lilly bulbs and they never flowered.  This year DH and I purchases a rose bush sapling.  We planted it this weekend!  Hopefully I'll develop a better green thumb and help this bush grow and flourish...if not, I'll let DH take it out with the lawn mower.

Another Boomer Story for our friends in Rockwell City, Iowa:  Boomer likes have his leash hang from the right side of his face.  If the leash hangs on the left side of his face, Boomer stops and waits for us to get ahead of him.  He forces us to move around him in such a way that the leash hangs on the right side of his face.  He wears a gentle lead collar.  It's just funny to test this notion and how quickly Boomer changes which side the leash hangs from the gentle lead.

The other day I spent the morning working on the free motion quilting for my latest project.  This picture taken by my husband will explain the situation I found myself in with my wonderful helper, Viggie.  It was a good thing I wasn't working on that part of the quilt where he decided to take a nap.  I thought it was bad when he wriggled his way between layers of a twin quilt.  I never thought I would find myself receiving reproachful glares from my kitten every time I moved the quilt just a little bit.  Has anyone else found themselves in this situation with their cats as they quilted?

For a side note, here's Remy!

He's hard to photograph just right because of his black fur.  Isn't he pretty?  He's our talkative cat.  This morning I heard him talking loudly to his heart's content in the bathroom during my husband's shower.  Our bedroom is on the second floor and the bathroom is on the first floor.

Now to my biggest baby-Boomer and our latest walking adventures.  We've chased bumble bees, squirrels, rabbits, cars, motorcycles, ducks (he was disappointed when they flew away) and other dogs.  While barking at other dogs, he's prone to either face plant in snow or walk into a pole.  He's not looking where he's going nor where his feet are planted.  Want to give him an extra bounce in his step?  Give him a stick!

DH needs the computer so time to sign off!

Quilts!

When I told you my cats liked to help me quilt, here's a few pictures to show what they do to make the quilting process difficult.  While DH walked our horse Boomer, I laid out my quilt top, backing and batting to make sure I had enough of both before I trimmed them.  Tomzilla, Remy, Joann and Viggie all helped me out.

What do you think of the backing?  It's pretty bright.  Remy and Viggie are fighting on the quilt top.  I wanted a shot of Remy, but Viggie came in and ruined the picture.  However, I was able to take one of Remy without Viggie.

Isn't he a beautiful cat?  Tomzilla needed to get into the fun as well.  Can you find him on the quilt top?  He kind of blends into the quilt top.

Viggie and Joanna were great helpers too when I put the quilt top, backing and batting onto my quilt frames.  Viggie did a tight rope show for us.

I don't have a picture of Joanna and her help.  I was saying her name and not taking a picture.  I had the quilt sandwhich pinned into the frame and busy working on pin basting.  She got on top of the boards and started walking across the fabric.  No fabric ripping off the frame or one surprised cat like the last time she tried getting onto the quilt frame.  DH was able to come down and get her off the fabric and I think distracted her till I finished pin basting.  I yelled her name and couldn't move to from my spot.  It's not easy to move from one area of the basement to the next spot with a quilt frame.

Friends are here so it's time to go!

May. 1st, 2008

It's supposed to be spring here in the upper midwest, but mother nature's not cooperating at  least weather wise.  HOwever, as you can see from this pile of fur, it's shedding season in the boomersquilt's household.  My goal is to insert a photo here...let's see if I can do it..

Aha!  I did it.  That excess fur comes from a small portion of his leg!  I can't wait to see how the rest of shedding season moves along.

Now that I've got the picture thing down, here's what I can do about showing my furry family.

Here's a picture of Boomer I took while he was running right next to me.  I thought it would turn out blurry.  As you can see, it came out much better than expected.  Doesn't he look just happy?

Here are other fun pictures of him:

And one more from our time playing outside:

While quilting I've found tuffs of Boomer's fur in the stiches and groaned.   So much for vacuuming the floor and thinking the vacuum sucked up all the fur.  At least lint rollers and the hand held pet fur attachements work on animal fur and fabric.

This is Viggie showing the world the quilt top is his.  So anything I quilt will have animal fur in it, on it and vacuumed off of it.

Hi!

Hello!  Welcome to my blog!  I hope you enjoy my stories about the adventures I have living with 5 cats, a dog and my attempts to create beautiful quilts.  When other fun events show up in my life, I'll do my best to include them on this blog; but for the most part this blog will focus on my quilting hobby and how animals help me make the quilts.

I'll introduce my animals and tell a story or two of how they've helped me out in past week with quilting.

Let me introduce Boomer, my awesome long haired German Shepherd dog!  He weighs 95 pounds and on a diet!  We adopted him from a wonderful shelter in Iowa last June.  I hope that this journal will help his wonderful trainer see what life he has with us and that Boomer's doing well with us.  Boomer's a spoiled boy-he gets to sleep with dh and I each night.  I never thought a king size bed would be so small!  Boomer's quite the bedhog and he loves sleeping next to Mommy!  He likes to eat his food and snacks on the carpet in the living.  I'm not sure why, but that's his preference.   So when we give him a treat in the kitchen, he trots over to the living room and eats it.  Boomer also likes spending time with me with whatever I'm doing.  The other day I was working with some fabric and playing with a potential pattern and had the fabric laid out on the living room floor.  My DH gave Boomer a treat and Boomer walks into the living room right where I'm working and started eating his treat.  I see this happening with a small degree of horror (who wants yucky dog germs and half eating snacks on fabric)I quickly get to my feet and move him and the rest of his treat back into the kitchen.

Our next animal helper is Vigo aka Viggie.  He's our 10 month old curious kitten who's mostly white and orange spots.  He's very curious and active little boy.  He's a mommy's boy as well.  Every night he must snuggle with me, purr as loudly as he can and massage me.  Usually this occurs around 2 am, so I have a nightly wake up call.  Viggie loves to watch me quilt and likes hiding underneath fabric.  When I'm freemotioning quilting and discover that the quilt won't move, I discover he's between the layers layiing down on the fabric.  Gee, I wonder why I can't move the quilt?  Viggie also likes to claim each quilting project as his own by laying down on the fabric whenever he can.

My second animal helper is Joanna.  She likes to jump from couches and test my quilting frame's ability to withstand her weight.  Thus far the score is Joanna 0-Quilting Frame 1.  The first time around she leaped from the couch and landed ont he floor.  Yes, she ripped some of the fabric I had thumb tacked into the boards.  Yes, I was frustrated with her; however, the look on her face landing on the floor was priceless.  She likes to watch the thread move on my machine and try to play with it when I'm sewing.

The other animals in the house are Lord Dante of Winterhaven, Dante for short, my beautiful white cat (no, he's not deaf), Tomzilla aka Little Monster (pronouced with a speech impediment widdle monsther) and Remy, my dark chocolate kitty.  These three mischief makers usually stay away from Boomer so their help occurs when Boomer's on his walks.  Remy likes to get on the fabric and stare at me till I take lift the toilet seat for him.  Thes guys get me away from the sewing machine and play with them.

Thanks for coming to my blog and come back again!
